Melburnians DABS and MYLA are a creative thunder team in more ways than one. Partners in the world of art and real life, this duo are no strangers to the galleries and walls of Melbourne alike. Dabs has been painting graffiti for over 10 years, and has been influenced by Melbourne’s unique style since he was an early teenager. His sense of letterforms and colour schemes, and his original flow and style is easily recognized worldwide. Three years ago Myla began painting with him, and in the past year her graffiti has begun showing up over Melbourne walls. Dabs as well as the other Melbourne graffiti writers that they paint with have influenced her graffiti style, as well has her knowledge of design and illustration. Dabs and Myla have both been trained in traditional illustration, and use acrylic paint on their illustrations, which are done on wood panels. Their work features intricate painted cities, imagined characters, animals and birds and displaying them in surreal situations. They take inspiration for their illustration work from cities around the world, people, places, music and of course graffiti and illustration. They have travelled to the USA together where they have exhibited in galleries in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Philladelphia, St Louis, and New Jersey. Their work has also been exhibited in London and Paris. In 2008, Dabs and Myla pursued their desire to paint as full time artists, whilst continuing to run the successful Melbourne gallery ‘Per Square Metre’. Since then, he has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, and in March of this year they are having their first solo exhibition titled ‘Like That!’. The exhibition will feature all new works against a gallery of completely hand painted walls. The exhibition is their farewell to the gallery and to Melbourne for a while as they move to Los Angeles in April to pursue their career attempting to paint with every free minute they have in between donuts and burgers!
